The Right Way to Use Elkonin Boxes
When it comes to sound mapping, Elkonin boxes are one of the most powerful phonics tools you can use at the kitchen table. But there’s one mistake that quietly undoes all their good work – and most parents don’t even realise they’re making it.
Here’s the fix.
What Are Elkonin Boxes?
Elkonin boxes (often referred to as sound boxes) are simply a row of empty squares – one box for each sound in a word. Your child says the word, taps out the sounds, and writes one letter (or letter combination) in each box.
Simple in theory. Hugely effective in practice. They’re one of the clearest ways to help a child understand that written words are made of sounds – not shapes, pictures or guesses.
The One Mistake That Changes Everything
Here it is: a lot of people draw one box per letter instead of one box PER SOUND.
It seems logical. The word “cat” has three letters, so three boxes – so that one’s fine. But the word “fish”? Four letters. And here’s where it goes wrong.
“Fish” has three sounds: /f/ /i/ /sh/
That means three boxes. The digraph “sh” – two letters that make one single sound – shares one box.
When you give “sh” two separate boxes, you’re accidentally teaching your child that letters are the unit of language. They’re not. Sounds are. And that distinction is the entire foundation of phonics.
Why It Matters So Much
The goal of Elkonin boxes isn’t just to spell words. It’s to train the brain to hear the sounds inside words and map each sound to its written form. This process – called orthographic mapping – is how words move from effortful decoding into automatic, instant recognition.
When the boxes match the sounds rather than the letters, the activity builds the right neural pathway. Every time your child writes “sh” into a single box, they’re reinforcing that those two letters are one sound unit. That’s exactly what their brain needs to become a fluent reader.
How to Set It Up Correctly
Try it now with these words. The number in brackets is the correct number of boxes:
- cat — /c/ /a/ /t/ — 3 boxes ✓
- fish — /f/ /i/ /sh/ — 3 boxes ✓
- ship — /sh/ /i/ /p/ — 3 boxes ✓
- duck — /d/ /u/ /ck/ — 3 boxes ✓
- chin — /ch/ /i/ /n/ — 3 boxes ✓
- lamp — /l/ /a/ /m/ /p/ — 4 boxes ✓
- black — /bl/ /a/ /ck/ — 3 boxes ✓
Notice that digraphs (sh, ch, ck, th, wh) always share one box. That’s the rule. One box = one sound, every time.
A Simple Way to Practise This Today
You don’t need a printed worksheet to try this right now. Just grab a piece of paper and a pencil.
- Say a simple CVC word aloud — “hot,” “pin,” “bed”
- Ask your child to tap their finger on the table once for each sound they hear
- Draw that many boxes together
- Ask them to write one letter per box
Once your child is confident with three-sound words, introduce a digraph word like “ship” or “chat.” Ask them how many sounds they hear before you draw any boxes. If they say four (because they’re counting letters), say the word slowly — “/sh/… /i/… /p/” — and count together.
That moment of realisation – “oh, those two letters are one sound” — is gold and a genuinely exciting one to witness!
